Gianluigi Buffon says it would be "mad" for Paris Saint-Germain to make the Champions League their top target as the goalkeeping legend prepares to fight for a starting spot.

The veteran goalkeeper confirmed he sought counsel from former Juventus team-mate Blaise Matuidi before opting to join the France worldwide at PSG, where he will play under new coach Thomas Tuchel. "I don't if it's the atmosphere, the magic of Paris, the enthusiasm of the fans, or the board who wanted me here so much... thank you again for all of this".

Speaking in Italian after a brief introduction in French, the 40-year-old said that his arrival on a free transfer is not only geared towards continental glory. The 40-year-old 2006 World Cup victor joins the big-spending Parisian side days after his contract with Juventus ended in June.

Recall, Buffon signed a contract with PSG for 1 + 1.

"I want to thank the club and the president for their confidence".

"I accepted the offer because the conditions are right for me to progress as a player and as a man - I can help the club progress a little more. They have some extraordinarily talented players and an extraordinary coach".

"Paris have great ambitions and there is a constant progression".

"Neymar can come back in Paris with the envy to win everything".

"A champion like Neymar has the chance to react well after his World Cup disappointment". "In one month, I will know more about the squad, and I will improve - I was unable to refuse that".

"I was always first choice at Parma, Juve and the national side, but nobody ever told me I'd be an automatic first choice" at PSG, he explained. "When that's the case, I'll stop".
