WAVY-TV showed pictures of the low-rise residential complex, with much of its roof sheared off, exposing a gaping hole in the structure. At least one person has been confirmed dead.

Michelle Anaya provided the information on behalf of Jean Lonchak Danylko's family at a news conference Monday.

Around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Virginia State Police reported that search and recovery efforts were ongoing at the scene and that there was one confirmed fatality inside the residential structure.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were investigating the cause of the crash and working to confirm the identity of the pilot, who was the only person in the helicopter when it crashed. Police say they don't have information about the pilot or the aircraft, citing structural safety.

Reportedly they were still trying to locate and identify the pilot of the helicopter.

The impact of the crash caused a fire within the Bristol Commons residential complex.

Donald Johnson told the newspaper he was 10 feet away from the crash when it struck his apartment building. Virginia State Police and the Williamsburg Police Department are both on scene.

Fire crews spent Sunday night into Monday putting out the fire and hot spots that came as a result of the crash. The name is spelled Danylko.
