Liverpool were hoping to sign Fekir before the World Cup kicked off and put the attacking midfielder through his medical paces, before then seeing the deal collapse after they tried to renegotiate the fee.

He has also turned heads overseas and almost completed a reported £60million move to Liverpool earlier this summer but a move fell through after suggestions that there was issues with his medical at the Merseyside club.

OL have been tipped to sell Nabil Fekir to Liverpool, with Aouar expected to be the France international's long-term replacement in the team.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Genesio is quoted as saying: "I am working under the assumption that [Fekir] will stay with us".

"The president has offered him the chance to leave". If Nabil is here, it makes my job easier.

"He is our captain and the coach's wish is to keep him". I think that he is looking at two possibilities: to stay to play the Champions' League with us or to leave to join a bigger club.

'I have nearly a father-son relationship with my players.

Some reports over the weekend suggested that Liverpool have already restarted the negotiations but this appears not to be the case.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has said Nabil Fekir will be at the club next season but added that he gave him permission to join Liverpool last month "because of their legendary status".

"Nabil is an exceptional player".

'While other clubs are interested, he will be with us next year in the middle.

Fekir is now in action at the World Cup for France and Les Bleus take on Belgium in the semi-final on Tuesday.
