Despite the uncertainty surrounding the manager's position, squad members appeared in top spirit as they commenced preparations ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea travel to Western Australia to take on Perth Glory in a friendly on July 23, before participating in the International Champions Cup with fixtures against Inter, Arsenal and Lyon either side of facing Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 5.

However, the Serie A club's reluctance to allow Sarri to leave has wreaked havoc with Chelsea's pre-season plans.

As late as Sunday evening, the Chelsea players did not know who was poised to take their training, while the confusion has led to knock-on effects for many in the transfer window.

Chelsea finished the season disappointingly after coming fifth in the Premier League, missing out on a Champions League spot in the process.

Napoli and Chelsea remain in discussions over a fee to release Sarri from his contract in Naples, despite the Italians already hiring Carlo Ancelotti as his replacement.
