Concerned England fans make the same joke about the referee against Sweden

Sweden, meanwhile, missed out on their first World Cup semifinal since 1994, as Harry Maguire and Dele Alli scored from a pair of headers with the Swedes at times struggling to contain the English attacks. Just before the half-time whistle blew, Raheem Sterling twice had the ball deep in Sweden's territory with little or no defence in front of him, but squandered both chances.

But he stressed that, despite the elimination of a host of big names from the tournament in Russia, England would be taking nothing for granted.

As England entered its second half against Sweden, an unmarked Dele Alli scored the second goal.

"I know loads of fans have come here and some have gone back home, but we are doing this for all of them". The victor battles France or Belgium in the 2018 World Cup final on July 15 in Moscow. It was England's eighth set-piece goal of its 11 in Russian Federation, and the centre back's first in global football.

At least England had proved a goal threat, whereas Sweden's blunt attack failed to muster a shot on target until two minutes of the restart.

His blushes were saved by the linesman's flag as he fluffed the first chance, but moments later he ran through again, this time trying to round the keeper, only to be denied once more. England had not kept a clean sheet in their four previous matches and had Pickford to thank for ensuring they did not concede this time. Robin Olsen and Victor Lindelof had impressive performances but it wasn't enough.

Sterling's movement was very good, though, causing Sweden's slow defense problems throughout.

"Up until that corner, I felt that we had everything under control", Sweden coach Janne Andersson said.

Virtually from kickoff, Sweden sent long passes forward to tall striker Ola Toivonen and looked for a flick-on.

He added: "I really like it that Trent got his first cap before the World Cup and then played in a [tournament] game - I've waited 51 years for that!" "I felt that we had the match in our hands".
