Abortion rights is emerging as a litmus test for the next Supreme Court nominee, with Democrats and at least one moderate Republican declaring they wouldn't support a nominee who opposes the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that established a woman's right to abortion.

Not only is Trump expanding the conservative Supreme Court majority, he is also moving at record pace to fill the federal appeals courts with young conservative judges who will preside for decades.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer declared Monday that abortion rights are hanging in the balance.

President Trump himself told reporters he had interviewed four candidates. He did not identify any of them. "We believe him. For the sake of women in ME, and across the country, we hope Senator Collins does too", NARAL President Ilyse Hogue said in a statement.

Collins quoted Chief Justice John Roberts, who called stare decisis a "fundamental principle of our judicial system". It will also appear in Google and Twitter searches. Tim Kaine said the future of Roe v. Wade is "very much in jeopardy" during a campaign event on Monday morning in Town Center.

He said, "Roe v Wade has been affirmed over the years ..." "I will say this: It will go back to the states, and the states will then make a determination".

While Kennedy was a conservative, he proved to be a somewhat unpredictable "swing" vote over his long career. He delivered the court's opinion in the Obergefell case, which provided a constitutional right to same-sex marriage.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump met with four people for 45 minutes each Monday and will continue meetings through the rest of the week.

"The dogma lives loudly within you and that's a concern", Feinstein said, "when you come to big issues that large numbers of people have fought for for years in this country".
