Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who stunned 10-term incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley in a Democratic congressional primary this week, continued a media blitz on Thursday night, appearing on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert".

This is her first time running for office. This time a year ago, she was working as a bartender in the Bronx.

She was a volunteer in Senator Bernie Sanders' 2016 Presidential campaign.

Crowley, 56, now the powerful chairman of the House Democratic Caucus who was seen as a potential future House Speaker, was unseated by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a socialist who is nearly half his age. She won 57.5% of the vote, while Crowley had just 42.5%.

One of the many new female faces joining U.S. politics this year, Ms Ocasio-Cortez is a Bronx-born Latina, a community organiser and educator from a working-class background. So the truth of the matter is what we should be fighting for is getting to 218.

Out of nowhere comes Ocasio-Cortez, who deftly used Crowley's establishment status against him. So it's no anomaly that Ocasio-Cortez, a Latina woman, and Ben Jealous, an African American man, are carrying the torch into high-profile general elections.

"It is the message that comes out of every election", Kennedy said.

"My background is as an educator, an organizer and an activist", Ocasio-Cortez said.

She also wants to cancel all student debt. Cuomo's campaign has aggressively taken on Nixon, portraying her as an inexperienced celebrity, while the governor has moved further to the left, tracking his opponent's stances on loosening marijuana restrictions, eliminating cash bail and addressing chronic problems in New York City public housing. She was still tending bar as recently as the spring of 2017.

Ocasio-Cortez calls for ending the war on drugs, demilitarizing police departments, and abolishing for-profit prisons. "There's a radical empathy that she has with people". "She grew up in this community and knew these people".

"It has been the honour of a lifetime to represent Queens and the Bronx".

At his concession speech, Mr Crowley played guitar, dedicating the song Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen to Ms Ocasio-Cortez.

"Our goal is to not just win an election but to build a movement", Jealous said at his victory party, "which will allow us to lead into law the new agenda that this state so desperately needs".

She's pushing for a "New Green Deal", a federal plan to thwart climate change via investing trillions in infrastructure. "They made a choice in one district". It's time for one of us.

Ocasio-Cortez ran a low-budget campaign, raising around $200,000 and refusing to accept donations from lobbyists.

"We talked to people throughout the Midwest, visited Flint, Michigan; and finally ended our trip with a stay at Standing Rock", she said, referring to the protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. Indeed, her campaign ads and literature did not mention Trump.

What is her platform?
