Indian Prime Minister and longtime yoga practitioner Narendra Modi led an estimated 50,000 volunteers through a series of yoga asanas Thursday to celebrate the fourth anniversary of International Yoga Day.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev led a gathering in Rajasthan, whose chief minister said it was the largest group yoga event. Thanks to the efforts of Nouf Marwaai, yoga has been popularized here.

The world has embraced Yoga and glimpses of this can be seen in the manner in which International Day of Yoga has been marked every year.

People gathered at a sprawling forest research institute - snakes and monkeys were removed in advance - before dawn for the communal session involving the yoga-mad premier, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

It is hard to say just how many people practise yoga around the world today, although some estimate it could be up to around 200 to 300 million. Nor is Yoga only what you practice in the morning.

The Indian navy also released pictures of sailors doing yoga on board the world's oldest aircraft carrier, the INS Viraat, decommissioned a year ago. "On 21 June, join Yoga Day celebrations".

Oman was also one of the co-sponsors of the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly which had declared in December 2014, at the initiative of Prime Minister of India, June 21 as the International Day of Yoga.

Modi said several people, who already practise Yoga, re-dedicate themselves to its pursuit.

Artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a special sand sculpture with the message "Yoga for Peace and Harmony" on a beach in the eastern city of Puri.

Yoga has boomed in recent decades, with millions doing it regularly, although in the West it is often more of a gymnastic than a spiritual activity.

People of all ages can be found practicing yoga in parks all over the country.
