XXXTentacion, the troubled 20-year-old rapper whose bleak, self-released rhymes propelled him to the top of the United States chart this year, was shot dead Monday in Florida, authorities said.
Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, better known as XXXTentacion, was killed while shopping for motorcycles in Miami, according to police. A subsequent report indicated the incident may have been a drive-by, with the alleged shooters leaving the scene in a black Dodge Journey, with witnesses claiming to have heard multiple shots fired.
The Sheriff's department did not identify the man but TMZ and Hollywood trade publication Variety reported that it was 20 year-old rapper XXXTentacion.
"The rapper's album "?" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard's 200 Albums Chart in March.
In his few years in the spotlight, the 20-year-old Florida native saw national success as a rapper as well as several high-profile run-ins with the law, including allegations he was abusive.
Onfroy has had a number of legal issues in the past including robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and more recently aggravated battery of his pregnant girlfriend.
In December 2017, he was put on house arrest and faced more charges, including witness tampering for allegedly talking to his girlfriend while in prison. He was under house arrest until March, but had his bail conditions relaxed so he could go on tour, according to Hiphopdx.com. His debut album, 17, followed, with his sophomore project, ?
Onfroy was initially one of two artists Spotify removed from its promoted playlists in May in accordance with its new policy on hateful music and conduct.
