Delegates had been faced with a clear choice - the joint North American bid boasts modern, established stadiums and well-developed transport links underpinned by Mexican football fervour.

Ghana curiously failed to cast their vote while South Africa's neighbours Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe joined Benin, Cape Verde, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in favouring the North American bid over their continental allegiance. The World Cup will go from a 32-team tournament to 48, however the victor will play the same amount of games (7) as they do now.

More details have emerged about how countries voted for the host of the 2026 football World Cup.

"Thank you for all of the compliments on getting the World Cup to come to the U.S.A., Mexico and Canada", Trump wrote.

The World Cup will return to North America for the first time since 1994.

Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto are in the running to be host cities for soccer's showcase tournament with Federation Internationale de Football Association to make the final decision on locations in 2020. The final of the expanded tournament will be played at MetLife Stadium in NY. We had an opportunity and (the final vote) was clear testimony that Africa will not get support from the rest of the world.

"Canada, Mexico, and the United States are ready to welcome the world to North America and serve as stewards of the largest FIFA World Cup™ in history".

The North America bid also had to overcome concerns about the impact of policies from the Trump administration, including attempts to implement a ban on travel by residents of six majority-Muslim countries.

For instance, Los Angeles may host the USA opener, Dallas is mentioned as a candidate to host the semifinals, while the final match is expected to take place in Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside of New York City. Teams are expected to arrive at least five days before their first World Cup game and would remain at least throughout the group stage, except for the dates immediately before and after match days.
