Spanish courts have recently cracked down on tax evasion among leading footballers. Former national team player Fernando Hierro has taken over as the squad's manager for the World Cup. He only scored one goal at each of the last three World Cups, but he doubled his finals tally in one humid night on Russia's Black Sea coast.

According to Opta, Ronaldo's hat-trick was the 51st of his career for club and country, as well as the 51st in the history of the World Cup.

Star soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo has accepted a suspended two-year prison sentence and will pay $21.7 million after being accused of tax fraud by Spanish authorities, Spanish publication El Mundo reported.

But Ronaldo was clearly not distracted by that, and his team-mate Bernardo Silva admitted after the game that "when he plays like that, everything is possible". Ronaldo sparked transfer rumours after Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-1 to clinch third straight Champions League trophy.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo controls the ball during a training session at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi on June 14, 2018.

Hierro, who cut an animated figure as he stood on the touchline with his sleeves rolled up, must have wondered at that point what he had let himself in for. Who knows. Ronaldo is 33 and this is likely his last chance to win a World Cup, so it would probably take more than his tax evasion payment going public to distract him from his goal.

It looked a soft penalty but the Video Assistant Referee agreed with Rocchi that it warranted a spot-kick.

Spain and Portugal are two of the great teams of the 21st century.

For Spain Diego Costa scored at the 24th and 55th minute of the match while Nacho scored in the 58th minute.

"When it was 3-2 he was the one who raised his team".

Fernando Hierro will take charge of the team for their campaign in Russian Federation.

"It wasn't an easy situation, but when you have this extremely good group of young players, and the staff, these excellent professionals, they make your life a lot easier".
