This year, their answer has been: "Either on June 15 or 16".

Mr Dambazau also urged all Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, to use the occasion of the celebration to pray for the peace, unity, prosperity and stability of the nation.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet on Thursday evening in Karachi for Shawal moon sighting. Some Muslims observe six days of fasting during Shawwāl beginning the day after Eid ul-Fitr since fasting is prohibited on this day.

12 months of Islamic calendar carry either 29 or 30 days.

An expert privy to the matter told The Express Tribune that there are nearly "no" chances of Shawaal moon sighting on the eve of June 14.

Muslims believe, therefore, that they are commanded by Allah as mentioned in the Quran to continue their fast until the last day of Ramadan and pay the Zakat-al-Fitr (tithes or almsgiving) before offering as well as celebrating the Eid.

Sultan Bin Saeed Al Badi Al Dhaheri, Minister of Justice issued the resolution for the moon-sighting committee. A moon-sighting committee has been drafted for this objective.

On Thursday, the sun in Delhi-NCR will set at 7:22 pm and that is when devotees will break their fast.

"If it is sighted on Thursday then the holiday will be on Friday, if the moon is sighted on Friday or Saturday, the holiday will be on Monday", the ministry says.

The Eid festival falls on the first day of the 10th month of Shawwal.
