A grandmother in Memphis has been charged by police after she was filmed letting two children out of pet kennels inside the boot of her vehicle.

According to a police affidavit, the children-aged seven and eight-said there was no room left in the auto, so they were told to sit inside the kennels.

Cheeks told police she drove from Whitehaven to Collierville with the 7 and 8-year-old children in the kennels. "If she did that, then that's out of character for her", neighbor Eugene Richmond told WREG.

She admitted driving them for about 35 minutes.

The footage shows Cheeks open the cage for one of the children, seen wearing turquoise leggings and a blue T-shirt. The concerned citizen who shot the video says that he recorded the video for evidence in case police didn't show up in time.

One neighbor told Local 24 it was "very sad because it feels like hell right here now, it's very hot".

Police say the children were not harmed.

Cheeks, meanwhile, was expected to appear in court on Monday.

The 62-year-old was being held Sunday at Shelby County Jail. She checked on the kids regularly, she said in the arrest affidavit, according to the AP.

Neighbors said Cheeks just bought two German Shepherd puppies that she would put in the kennels in the back of her truck.

"I don't think she knew because she loves her grandkids", Cowan said.

She posted bond of $100 and the department of children's services is now investigating the family.
