It follows a day of historic talks at Singapore's Capella Hotel, on Sentosa Island - the first meeting between a sitting US President and a North Korean leader. "Anybody who takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it, and run it tough - I don't say "he was nice" or I don't say anything about it", Trump said.

Trump has now essentially adopted the standard North Korean line, calling the military exercises a "provocative" drain of money and announcing they would stop while he continues talks with Kim, whom he repeatedly praised as a solid negotiating partner. The former refers to dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapon capability, while the latter can include the eventual elimination of the US nuclear umbrella on the Korean Peninsula.

On human rights, Trump said Tuesday's meetings only very briefly touched on the topic, but that the two sides would discuss it more in the future.

But others were sharply critical, claiming it appeared Mr. Trump offered the freeze in joint military drills without first securing full buy-in from South Korea.

Trump and Kim pledged at the historic summit in Singapore to move to a denuclearization of the North, while providing little on the specific plan and verification.

Trump's announcement came as a surprise to the South Korean government.

"However we think that it is crucial to pursue various solutions for better dialogue". -South Korean military drills - and wants to remove the 28,500 USA troops stationed in the South as a deterrent against North Korea.

Moon has made great efforts playing the role of mediator to bring the cold war foes back to dialogue.

Trump also stressed that he believes he has "helped" the estimated 120,000 people in North Korean prison camps by starting the process of potentially normalizing relations with Pyongyang. Kim, despite his goofy smile and amusing haircut, is a monstrous figure at the helm of one of the world's most repressive nations, where thousands of citizens have been murdered, tortured, imprisoned or raped, and where roughly 18 million people don't get enough food, according to the United Nations. Trump then directed Kim to walk down a hallway, where they briefly spoke.

Warmbier was arrested in North Korea in 2016 and was charged with spying.

Trump's unilateral declaration of suspension of the U.S. Trump defended his decision by emphasizing the high cost of joint military exercises. The promise "to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" is meaningless: North Korea has consistently used that formulation to suggest it might give up its nukes one day - so long as the USA does as well.

Current and former U.S. defence officials expressed concern at the possibility that the United States would unilaterally halt military exercises without an explicit concession from North Korea that lowers the threat from Pyongyang.

"We had a historic meeting, and chose to leave the past behind", Kim said.

"Without Otto this would not have happened", Mr Trump said.

Trump says that his one-on-one meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was "very, very good" and that the two have an "excellent relationship".
