North Korea Poses No Nuclear Threat, Despite Weapons

As Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) said Tuesday in defense of the summit on conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt's show (in one of those gaffes in which a politician actually tells the truth), if you have nuclear weapons, you should be given a meeting with the USA president.

But in characteristically bullish tweets, Trump said everyone "can now feel much safer than the day I took office" and people could "sleep well tonight!"

"It's going to be a long journey and there's a lot of work to be done yet, this is just the beginning of negotiation that could encompass a lot of very complex and hard issues between United States and North Korea that will include numerous major powers in that part of the world", said Dr Peter Brooks, Senior Fellow for National Security Affairs at the Heritage Foundation.

Pompeo says he was there when Trump talked about it with Kim.

No sitting United States and North Korean leaders have visited each other's countries since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. More controversial are the annual spring drills - such drills were cancelled in the mid-1990's when other agreements were made with North Korea.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo walks with Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, as he arrives at Osan Air Base in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, on Wednesday.

Joint military exercises between US and South Korean troops have long angered Pyongyang.

"Under the circumstances that we're negotiating a very comprehensive complete deal, I think it's inappropriate to have war games", Trump said of the joint military exercises that for decades have bolstered USA and South Korean readiness. "It's significant that North Korea and the USA, which maintained hostile relations for decades, have taken steps to begin a new relationship", Cho added.

That's his essence. He has decided he trusts the butcher of Pyongyang who had his own brother and half-brother assassinated, has killed top aides for looking the wrong way, has 120,000 fellow Koreans in the political prisons where many starve to death and on and on in the Kim-dynasty atrocities department.

On Wednesday Trump framed this as a win, saying the U.S. will now "save a fortune". "It is inappropriate to have war games", the USA president told reporters after the summit.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said Tuesday that he wants Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to brief senators on the substance of what the two nations discussed, including whether USA troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula would remain. Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono is also heading to Seoul and is due to meet with Mr Pompeo and his South Korean counterpart. North Korea has long objected to the drills as a security threat.

Both Trump and Kim got things they want.

He said many in the media were hoping that the talks would "blow up" and that Kim Jong would "humiliate and embarrass Trump".

There are usually two sets of exercises every year, in spring and autumn, involving a massive number of troops and military hardware. Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency director, then plans to fly to Beijing to update the Chinese government on the talks.

KCNA also mentioned the end of U.S.

Washington has described the drills as defensive in nature, but Pyongyang says they are a rehearsal for invasion and has long called for them to end. Trump and Kim referred back to the so-called Panmunjom Declaration, which contained a weak commitment to denuclearization but no specifics on how to achieve it.
