That's a big concession to make, and one that caught many people by surprise.

It was not immediately clear what specific progress, if any, had been made in preliminary discussions between USA and North Korean officials.

If, as Trump said on Tuesday he sensed, Kim wants the grand bargain of disarmament for economic integration, the personal endorsement from the two leaders on negotiations may be all that counts.

Pyongyang has reason to feel confident after the meeting which was a major coup for an isolated and heavily sanctioned regime that has long craved global legitimacy.

"We appreciate President Trump's recent comments about our family", they said.

But Bossert, who resigned unexpectedly a day after Bolton came on board, said that despite Bolton's ill-timed reference to the Libya model, which he described as "gaffe", the national security adviser is ultimately going to play a key role in the implementation of the denuclearization agreement.

U.S. President Donald Trump shakes hands with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018.

Both Seoul and U.S. military commanders in the South indicated they had no idea the announcement was coming, and analysts expressed immediate concern.

He gave the North Koreans their own copy.

The summit went on, however, and Trump and Kim later dined on a variety of Korean and Western dishes, including grilled Portuguese octopus, shrimp cocktail, braised cod, pork belly with fried rice and braised short rib.

Ambassador Joseph DeTrani, who served as a top US negotiator with Pyongyang before the last attempt at diplomacy broke down in 2009, was more optimistic. "The world has taken a big step back from potential nuclear catastrophe!"

At one point, it features a montage with babies and auto factories, suggesting what a more prosperous future for North Korea could look like if it agreed to give up its nuclear arsenal. They had a summit as a nuclear state with Kim on equal turf with Trump, got the United States to halt joint military exercises with South Korea.

Less than an hour later, Trump tweeted a greeting to the autocrat he once mocked as "little rocket man": "Thank you to Chairman Kim, our day together was historic!"

World powers from China to Japan, the European Union and Russian Federation welcomed its outcome - while cautioning it was only the first step towards resolving the nuclear stand-off with Pyongyang.

But that language wasn't mentioned in a joint declaration signed by Trump and Kim, and no timetable was set for North Korea to eventually give up nuclear weapons.

It also legitimized Kim, critics charged, feting a regime which stands accused of widespread human rights abuses.

Two years ago Barack Obama travelled to Cuba - and was roundly denounced by conservatives for breaking bread with totalitarian leaders and praised by liberals for his statesmanship.

It quoted Kim as saying during his talks with Trump that "in order to achieve peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and realize its denuclearization, the two countries should commit themselves to refraining from antagonizing with each other ... and take legal and institutional steps to guarantee it".

We firmly reject any false equivalency between North Korea's illegal nuclear and missile programs, which are enormously destabilizing and have been repeatedly condemned by the UN Security Council, and our long-standing joint activities with our allies, which are transparent and defensive in nature.
Mr Trump said he wanted to see USA troops withdraw from the South.

The news comes after the pair made history with a meeting in Singapore to try and bring an end to their differences.
