ODAWARA, Kanagawa Prefecture-A knife-wielding man attacked and killed a male passenger and seriously injured two women on a Shinkansen bullet train in Kanagawa Prefecture on June 9.

He attacked the victims around 10pm aboard the shinkansen train which was travelling from Tokyo to a station in Osaka, police and news reports said. Some time after the departure of the young man suddenly began waving a knife and attacked were with him in the same auto passengers. The 38-year-old victim was also stabbed in the neck and was later pronounced dead.

Public broadcaster NHK reported that the suspect told police he felt "frustrated and wanted to kill someone".

Two women were also injured.

The police detained the 22-year-old male stabber on suspicion of attempted murder and are now investigating the case. At least two knives were found at the scene of the crime.

Witnesses said passengers fled in panic, some of them in tears.

According to the Kanagawa prefectural police and other sources, three passengers on the train were attacked.

"I have always been anxious about him", the woman said in a telephone interview with Kyodo News early Sunday.

After he started living with his grandmother, she said he mainly stayed home, reading books and surfing the internet.

The attack occurred in vehicle No. 12 of the 16-car train, which was carrying some 880 passengers. (JR Tokai) announced it would move up its plan to install more security cameras in bullet trains.
