Xi also presented Putin with China's first "friendship medal", calling him a "good and old friend of the Chinese people" during a live broadcast on state television.

Notably, Vladimir Putin's personal frustration with the Group had been reported long before the 2014 suspension - the Russian President skipped the world leaders meeting in Camp David, the US presidential retreat near Washington, DC, in May 2012, and Putin's "loneliness" was a trending world headline during the G-8 summit in Northern Ireland in 2013. Such relations have contributed to the building of a new type of worldwide relations and a community with shared future for humanity, Xi said.

President Trump said back in march, a summit with Putin is a possibility but Russian-American ties have soured since then.

In his meeting with Putin, Rouhani said a "more serious and important" dialogue between Russian Federation and Iran was needed regarding the nuclear deal following Washington's "illegal" withdrawal from the pact, according to a Kremlin transcript.

Xi placed the large golden medal around Putin's neck at the grandiose Great Hall of the People in Beijing in front of dignitaries from both countries. They include China, Russia along with four ex-Soviet Central Asian nations, as well as India and Pakistan.

"It wasn't us who left", Putin said.

Xi noted that the importance of trade between the two countries is significant beyond its sheer volume due to the strategically important goods exchanged between China and Russian Federation including energy supplies, energy extraction hardware, new environmentally friendly technology, space exploration technology, aviation equipment, terrestrial transport technology and other heavy machinery.

While Donald Trump is in Canada getting the cold shoulder from G7 leaders, Russian President Vladimir Putin is receiving accolades in China.

"The relationship between Russian Federation and China is a friendly, neighbourly one, developing... in the spirit of overarching strategic partnership", he said. He added, however, that no concrete agreements have been reached and no discussions were under way.

"No matter what country has terrorists, we must strengthen our regional cooperation and not allow them to affect regional security", he told a press conference Friday, adding that the SCO bloc had stopped "hundreds" of terrorist acts.

Putin says Washington's decision to exit the agreement could "destabilize the situation" in the region.

US President Donald Trump last month announced that the US was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal signed by the Obama administration in 2015 under which Tehran had agreed to limit its nuclear activities and allow in global inspectors in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

President Mamnoon Hussain and his Iran counterpart Hassan Rouhani agreed to bolster economic ties between the countries in a meeting held on Saturday in Qingdao, China.
