The Pistons recently hired the former Nets general manager Ed Stefanski to lead their search for new front-office executives.

Pistons owner Tom Gores announced the move Monday, calling Casey one of the most successful and respected coaches in the National Basketball Association.

A month after being fired by the Toronto Raptors, Casey agreed to a five-year deal to become head coach of the Detroit Pistons, two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday.

Casey posted a 320-238 (.573) overall record as Raptors coach. The NBA coach of the year finalist was sacked shortly after Toronto was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"I am excited and honored to join the Detroit Pistons, a franchise with a championship history and a roster that is ready to win now", Mr. Casey said. "As a team, we are constantly trying to grow and improve in order to get to the next level".

This led to Casey getting fired, even after being awarded Coach of the Year by his peers.

After seven seasons at the helm, Casey was sacked by the Raptors in May despite leading Toronto to a franchise-best 59-23 record during the regular-season. My thoughts on Casey and the team moving forward in the video above!

Casey coached seven years in Toronto, making the playoffs the past five.

He coached the Minnesota Timberwolves for a little more than one season, going 53-69.

According to TSN's Josh Lewenberg, Casey seriously considered taking a year off but bought into an aggressive recruitment from Pistons ownership. Casey's 2005-06 squad finished in the NBA's top 10 in fewest average points per game and lowest opponent field goal percentage.
