Sokratis has been a key part of the Dortmund defence since joining the club from Werder Bremen five years ago but his future at the Bundesliga giants has been in serious doubt in recent months.

The Daily Mail reports that the Gunners have offered the 26-year-old a new contract to stay at the Emirates Stadium, but there is a pay cut on his existing £120,000-a-week deal.

Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign Borussia Dortmund's Sokratis Papastathopoulos for £16m, which will make the defender the second signing of the summer under new boss Unai Emery when he is unveiled next month.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has continued to strengthen his squad with the signing of Greece worldwide Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to The Telegraph.

Sokratis has been a regular feature in the major European competitions in his time at Dortmund and he has a mountain of form in the global sphere too, having made 79 appearances for Greece since making his debut back in 2008.

On Sunday evening, RMC Sport reported that the 17-year-old was in London ahead of his switch to the Gunners but was considering a "change of heart" regarding the transfer.

In other news, Arsenal have also looked to reform their midfield this summer but Emery is hoping to commit a significant proportion of the budget to tie up Aaron Ramsey as he sees the Welshman as one of the pillars of his team.

Arsenal's defence has always been highlighted by pundits as a weak point and the club's new management team look set on strengthening it as a priority in their first window working together.
