Many people were angered by the episode after it aired on 1 June, with many wondering why Chopra, who is Indian, agreed to take part in the narrative.

The channel ABC also defended Chopra and issued a statement explaining the whole situation.

"I'm extremely saddened and sorry that some sentiments have been hurt by a recent episode of Quantico", the actor said in a tweet.

Indian actress Priyanka Chopra has apologised after outrage over a plotline on her US TV series Quantico.

But when Chopra's character holds up Hindu prayer beads as evidence that an Indian nationalist is planning to detonate a nuclear bomb in NY, it becomes clear that Pakistan is being framed.

"ABC Studios and the executive producers of 'Quantico" would like to extend an apology to our audience who were offended by the most recent episode, "The Blood of Romeo, '" an ABC spokesperson said in a statement.

Fans reacted with fury online after the episode aired, with some declaring Ms Chopra "an insult to India" and the episode an attack on Hindus.

"Priyanka Chopra, who is now seen in ABC Studios" crime drama Quantico, recently, came under fire over an episode. Chopra's character thwarts the plot after noticing a Hindu symbol - the rudraksha - on a chain worn by one of the terrorists.

Chopra has been trolled on Twitter since the telecast and a street protest was also held in New Delhi on Saturday by a fringe Hindu outfit that demanded she be sent to Pakistan as a punishment. "I sincerely apologise", she added.

Quantico will wrap after season three, which is now airing.

Chopra, the face of the show - and a high-profile figure who has made the rare, successful crossover from Indian cinema to Hollywood - was targeted for not doing more after seeing the script.
