The trilateral meeting, the fourth of its kind, was chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping and attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Mongolian President Khaltmaa Battulga.

At the SCO summit, Moscow and Beijing again expressed their hopes for a high level of bilateral cooperation, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters at a follow-up press conference, emphasizing the importance of such a stance.

"Trump fulfils his pre-election promises", he said.

While he's taken a tougher stance on traditional US allies, Trump - who remains under investigation as part of an inquiry into potential collusion between his presidential campaign and the Kremlin - has charted a warmer course with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Donald Trump is ramping up his blast of Canada on Twitter this morning over what he says are unfair trade practices as the USA president prepares to make his Canadian debut later today. "I have been Russia's worst nightmare...but with that being said, Russian Federation should be in this meeting".

Commenting on the G-7's statement, Putin said: "It's time to stop that chatter and deal with real issues".

Trump's protectionist policies that have imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union are likely to become a flashpoint during the meeting with the leaders of Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Italy and the La Malbaie, Quebec, Friday and Saturday. And Trudeau said: "We are going to defend our industries and our workers". Back in the day, our colleagues refused to come to Russian Federation for well-known reasons.

Trump's presidency has been clouded by a federal investigation into Russian meddling into the 2016 US election and possible coordination by people in Trump's campaign.

"We are not going to live with the deals the way they are", Trump said.

Meanwhile, in Canada, a growing rift between the United States and its most important allies was on full display.

"Russia is more often than not trying deliberately to be a strategic rival, to deliberately counter the good things we're trying to achieve in the world than for no other reason than to just counter them".

"Trump's policies justified [the] growing closeness, especially for Russian Federation but also for China, given the volatile relationship with the U.S.", Ms. Repnikova told AFP.

Tension has been building over a year of policymaking that has distanced the United States from traditional allies, including by Trump's decisions to withdraw the USA from the Paris climate accord and the Iran nuclear agreement.

Addressing the summit, the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, whose country has observer status in the group, said Iran would expect other participants in the nuclear deal to provide guarantees that they would honour the agreement.
