Among the 42% of Americans who would be interested in traveling into space, 45% of them say the main reason for their interest would be to "experience something unique".

While the findings by the Pew Research Center show that an overwhelming chunk of the country appreciate the importance of space exploration - 72 percent want the United States to remain a global leader in the industry - opinions are divided on whether Mars or the moon should be a priority. He told reporters he said he had very fruitful talks with NASA US colleagues today, and yesterday had a long conversation with colleagues from the European Space Agency (ESA), adding that "there are joint projects and that "We agreed to act together".

When given the choice of humans or robots in future NASA space expeditions, 58 percent of American adults believe that human astronauts are essential, while 41 percent say that humans are not essential to these types of missions.

However, if NASA were to send expeditions into space, a majority of Americans say they consider it essential that humans, not exclusively robots, make the trip. Even as private companies are emerging in the industry, NASA remains an absolutely necessary source of space discovery, according to study participants.

Monitoring key parts of Earth's climate system: 63% said it should be a top NASA priority; 25% said it should be an important but lower priority; and 11% said it is not too important or should not be done.

This issue is very relevant due to the emergence of private companies, including Elon Musk's SpaceX, that are venturing out in space. Gerst is the only astronaut of the mission that had participated in a space mission in 2014.

"The majority of private companies rely on NASA as a customer and, if not, aspire to", Dreier explains in Axios.
