Minister of State for Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibril, made this known on Saturday at a news conference to officially kick-start the activities leading to the commemoration of the World Environment Day on the 5th June 2018. Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said, "Plastic is not the problem, but what we do with plastic is the problem". "As the Ministry of Development is responsible for matters relating to environment, we must lead through example".

The presentation by Nubi revealed that UNILAG generates an average of 2.5 tons of plastic waste per day and a huge volume of 840 tons per year.

In drought-prone Cyprus, the president said Tuesday that he wants his country to play a coordinating role in the efforts of nations in the Mediterranean and Middle East to deal with climate change.

Solheim, however, was optimistic about India and counts on the initiative taken by the country's political leaders.

Jibril said, the theme of this year's celebration "Beat Plastic Pollution" with the action to "Love your Environment", was very apt for Nigerians in Nigeria, bearing in mind the nation's peculiar nature on plastic and polythene disposal. The theme for 2018, "Beat Plastic Pollution", is a call to action for all of us to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time.

- In case you collect plastic bags, sachets, and bottles when shopping, segregate them for reuse and recycling. While we really appreciate the steps undertaken by Pakistan Navy to reduce plastic pollution, other organisations and industries also need to join the effort to make our environment totally clean from such hazardous waste.

He said available data indicated that plastic waste accounted for 95 per cent of total amount of waste generated in terms of weight, while plastic use had been in existence for over 70 years. Increasing green cover is one of the most practical ways of countering the dangers of rising dioxin resulting from burning plastic wastes.

"They also hold no value post use so are not attractive to those companies who are purchasing and re-using used plastic", she said.

It is estimated that we use and discard 500,000,000,000 (half a trillion) plastic bags each year and over a million plastic bottles are sold every minute. This is a threat not only to marine life such as coral reefs but also birds and animals.

Humans are both creatures and molders of their environment, which gives them physical sustenance and affords them the opportunity for intellectual, moral, social and spiritual growth.

He praised India for its growing focus on environmental protection, but also noted while travelling the country he'd seen some of the most scenic places "destroyed by plastic pollution".
