But there comes a time when a player is so legendary to a team and a city, no one should be allowed to wear his number ever again.

Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas will have his No. 34 jersey retired by the Buffalo Bills during the 2018 season, the team announced Wednesday. And to make it that much more exciting, the ceremony will come during the October 29 Monday night game against the New England Patriots.

Thomas is the franchise's all-time leader in career rushing yardage (11,938), attempts (2,849) and touchdowns (65). "To be in the company of those two players is something special". In 1989 and 1990, his combined total yards from scrimmage was 3,742.

To steal one of the many replies from Bills fans to this tweet, this was LONG overdue. Currently, he is 15th on the National Football League all-time list for most rushing yards in a career. It included a stellar 1991 campaign when he rushed for 1,407 yards and added a career-high 631 receiving yards. He was a five-time Pro Bowler who played in four Super Bowls with Buffalo, all four of which the team infamously lost.

He joins former teammates Jim Kelly and Bruce Smith as the lone members of the team to have their numbers retired.
