In the first two games of the series, the Capitals' dominance appeared in the score sheet not in special teams, but in even-strength goals.

The Tampa Bay Lightning went into Game 3 of their series against the Washington Capitals already down 2-0 - losses both suffered at their home arena - and facing a rising din of criticism from the fan base and the media.

Stamkos opened the scoring with 6:07 remaining in the first period. They sustained a streak of more than 20 kills in a row that spanned parts of the first two rounds, and their power-play success rate of 32.6 percent entering Tuesday was second-best among all postseason teams.

Vasilevskiy was a big part of holding on to the lead as he made seven saves on the penalty kill as part of a bounce-back performance after being criticized for his play earlier in the series. Washington outscored Tampa Bay a combined 7-1 during 5-on-5 in Games 1 and 2.

The Lightning have scored four goals against the Capitals, one at 5-on-5. Cooper knows the only way his team will be able to bounce back is if they get back to the type of play they have displayed in all but the first two games of this series.

Coach Barry Trotz said on Tuesday that Backstrom remains "day-to-day".

The Capitals will look to take a 3-0 series lead with a victory tonight.

Washington center Lars Eller believes the added discipline that comes with being on the road has been very beneficial for the Capitals and has allowed them to be more focused. "They scored, we didn't and that's on us", Kuznetsov said.

In the first two games, Washington scored goals in the waning seconds of a period in each game. "Not good enough for power play, but we will be better for sure".
