They were headed to the scenic Papikondalu, or "Papi Hills" in the West Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. The boat was reportedly carrying around 50 people. Earlier reports had said that at least 10 people swam to safety.

Last year, a boat accident in Vijayawada on the Krishna river claimed as many as 21 lives.

The ill-fated boat was on its way to Rajamahendravaram from Kondamodalu when tragedy struck. "When the boat is nearly 10 minutes away to the banks, heavy rain and wind occurred, the boat lost balance and slid one side". Near Varapalli, the driver tried to turn the boat but tilted to one side due to the high speed winds and capsized immediately, " Misra said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his anguish over the incident on Twitter. Condolences to the bereaved families.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials to undertake rescue operations on a war footing.
