Deep Silver, the company publishing Shenmue III, recently announced that the sequel will not be coming out this year. Deep Silver has now confirmed this, with it now being scheduled for the broad release window of 2019.

Deep Silver's announcement of this delay doesn't give us much to go on, except that the delay seems to be necessary in order to further polish the game, and have it meet the unwieldy expectations of Shenmue evangelists. This will allow developer YS Net some extra time to "polish the quality of the game", though for Shenmue fans it is yet another hurdle they face in finally getting their hands on the long-awaited game. "We can not thank you enough for your enduring support". It surpassed its initial goal easily and, with the help of Deep Silver, it's moving right along in development.

Both letters can be found over on Shenmue 3′s Kickstarter update page.

Shenmue 3 must be one of the most successful and highly anticipated Kickstarter projects.

Shenmue fans will at least be able to play the first two games in 2018 as SEGA will re-release Shenmue 1 and 2 for modern-day platforms (including the PC).

Shenmue III will have familiar elements from its predecessors and new fight mechanics to achieve a new level of interactive storytelling.

Given the brevity of the statement, Deep Silver doesn't really get into why the delay is necessary. Metro: Exodus, the third installment of the popular Metro shooter franchise was also delayed.
