Ever wanted an all-wheel drive companion that is also environmentally-friendly?

Subaru of America, which has recorded nine consecutive years of record sales and 10 consecutive years of growth, has announced its first plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV), borrowing the technology from minor shareholder Toyota.

A number of green-car buyers were disappointed when Subaru chose not to offer a hybrid version with the launch of its second-generation Crosstrek previous year. Headquartered at a zero-landfill office in Cherry Hill, N.J., the company markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of more than 620 retailers across the United States.

The Subaru announcement also detailed that the auto will use a version of the Toyota hybrid system from the Prius Prime. But given that it will benefit from an electric motor, expect the XV Hybrid to produce slightly more horsepower and torque than standard. Subaru will, of course, offer the gasoline-fueled power in the form of its 2.0-liter boxer-four engine. We're not exactly sure as to what it will be, but our best guess is that it will be a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) geared specifically for hybrid use.

Making things even more interesting is the fact that Subaru is once again teaming up with its technological partner Toyota (remember, the two jointly developed the Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86).

Naturally, some unique design cues will set the Crosstrek Hybrid apart from the gas-only model, although both will be built around the new Subaru Global Platform.

Subaru Australia managing director Colin Christie has previously said that a hybrid model is inevitable as emissions standards become tighter.

Rowley told WhichCar that while Subaru Australia is interested in an XV Hybrid, at this stage it's a US-only offering.
