In this March 1, 2018 file image from video, Yoselyn Ortega, a trusted nanny to a well-to-do family, listens to court proceedings during the first day of her trial, in NY. Ortega, who's from the Dominican Republic, had been recommended by her sister, a nanny for another NY family, and her background and references were faked by her family.

The parents say Ortega's relatives gave false and misleading information about her background as a nanny. "It is right that she should live and rot and die in a metal case, like the ugly and dark shadow of Lulu and Leo's bright and shiny lights".

Krim had been at a swimming class with her 3-year-old daughter, Nessie Krim.

Ortega said Monday she was "very sorry for everything that happened".

Ortega never disputed that she killed the children, but instead pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

"But your failure to seek, all these years, treatment for your mental illness nullifies that mitigation", Justice Gregory Carro told Ortega just before announcing her sentence.

A former NY nanny was sentenced to life behind bars Monday for murdering two young children in her care five years ago in a case that tormented parents worldwide.

Yoselyn Ortega (YOH'-sih-lihn ohr-TAY'-guh) was convicted last month in the deaths of 6-year-old Lucia Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim and was sentenced Monday.

Ortega was introduced to the Krims through a family friend and had been working with them for two years, police said. Their father was out of town.

Prosecutors argued that Ortega was jealous of Marina Krim's life and lashed out in the worst way possible - at her children.

Ortega was also struggling to pay tuition fees for her 17-year-old son, whom she had brought to the United States from the Dominican Republic and enrolled in a private school.

Yoselyn Ortega listens in court May 14, 2018, as a judge sentences her to 50 years to life in prison with no possibility of parole for the murder of two children in 2012.

The bloody bodies of Lucia "Lulu" Krim, six, and her brother Leo, two, were found by their mother in a bathtub at the Manhattan flat on 25 October 2012.
