Germany coach Joachim Loew has agreed to extend his contract with the world champions to 2022, he said on Tuesday before the unveiling of his preliminary World Cup squad.

Neuer, Germany's captain and goalkeeper, has not played since September and still has to prove his fitness at a fortnight-long training camp in northern Italy, which starts next week.

Loew has also selected Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan despite the pair landing in hot water with the German FA over the weekend after the Premier League stars posed for pictures with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Loew will need to present his final squad selection to Federation Internationale de Football Association by June 4.

"We saw that we're not as good as we're always told we are - and perhaps some of us think we are". Sandro Wagner, though, misses out, despite an impressive season at Bayern Munich and the 30-year-old has scored 15 goals and provided six assists in 34 appearances for the Bavarian giants thus far this term, and has also netted five goals for Germany in just eight caps.

"To work with the best players in Germany, then develop them and to make them better, to form a team that sets the highest goals, this is what drives and still gives me joy".

Leipzig's Timo Werner will be the first-choice forward in Russian Federation.

Meanwhile, Mario Gotze was not included in Germany's preliminary World Cup squad because of his ongoing struggles with Borussia Dortmund. "He did not show what his qualities are".

They open their World Cup campaign against Mexico on June 17, before fixtures against Sweden (June 23) and South Korea (June 27).
