The Pashupatinath temple is regarded as the most sacred and oldest temple of Shiva (Pashupati) in Nepal.

Expediting the process to connect the eastern borders of the country with the Himalayan nation, the Indian government has forwarded a draft for conducting a feasibility study on the Raxaul-Kathmandurail project, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up his two-day state visit to the neighbouring country.

Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot said that Modi was trying to influence Hindu voters back home by offering prayers at temples in Nepal.

On Saturday, Modi had tweeted: "My Nepal visit was historic".

Foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale, who was in Nepal with PM Modi responded saying that the Nepal visit had been planned months beforehand on February 12 when PM Modi called and congratulated K P Oli for becoming the new Nepal PM. This is not a good trend for democracy.

The Congress on Saturday alleged that PM Narendra Modi's visit to temples in Nepal is aimed at influencing voters in Karnataka where polling is being held today.

Although Gehlot flagged the issue, Congress leaders were not willing to discuss it publicly to avoid any major controversy on poll day. "If one asks him (Modi), no other person is Hindu, except the BJP and RSS people, besides him and Amit Shah", he said.

Briefing Nepals Parliament on Prime Minister Modis two-day state visit, Oli said the visit has elevated bilateral ties to new heights. An environment was created to take forward Nepal-India relations based on mutual benefit, Oli said while claiming that national interests were kept in mind while dealing with India and no compromise will be made.

Modi arrived in Kathmandu on May 11.

Oli also said he would soon pay an official visit to China but did not disclose the date of the trip.
