Trump made the request in the federal papers Sunday night - supporting Cohen's emergency request to block the feds from reviewing any of his documents until Cohen gets a chance to look at them or until the court appoints a "special master" to take over the review.

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's personal attorney, has been "under criminal investigation" for months in NY because of his business dealings, the Justice Department said Friday.

Cohen is "being investigated for criminal conduct that largely centers on his personal business dealings", Thomas McKay, an assistant United States attorney, said in a court filing. They did, to some extent, identifying that Cohen had three clients in the past year: Trump, a former Republican fundraiser named Elliott Broidy and a third person who declined to be named.

Prosecutors contend that Cohen was "performing little to no legal work" for Trump.

Cohen sought a temporary restraining order last week to prevent prosecutors from reviewing the information, claiming that it was covered by attorney-client privilege.

It's not often that the leader of any country gives a public opinion about lawyer-client confidentiality or privilege.

"Unlike a search of a traditional law office, the information gathered thus far in the investigation suggests that the overwhelming majority of evidence seized during the searches will not be privileged material, but rather will relate to Cohen's business dealings". Then there's a feedback loop between Fox News and the president, in which he promotes the network's arguments against the FBI investigation and the investigation by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and Fox News, in turn, reports on the president's response.

Cohen has admitted to paying adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair with Trump.

Russian Federation has denied interfering in the election and Trump has said there was no collusion.

Cohen did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mueller's team recently told Trump's lawyers that he is a subject of the investigation, but not a criminal target.

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's embattled lawyer, is expected to appear in a courtroom in Manhattan today as prosecutors and Cohen's lawyer continue to argue over the fruits - and future - of the extraordinary raids that federal agents conducted last week on Cohen's office, home and hotel room. He wrote "I have many (too many!) lawyers and they are probably wondering when their offices, and even homes, are going to be raided with everything, including their phones and computers, taken".

On Sunday, attorneys with the law firm Spears & Imes filed a letter on Trump's behalf, arguing that Trump is asserting his attorney-client privilege, and should be allowed to view the documents so that he and his legal team can determine which ones are privileged before the government's team makes that decision. "All lawyers are deflated and concerned!"

They said investigators seized more than a dozen electronic devices and other items including documents and data unrelated to the probable cause upon which the search warrants were based.
