Ross McCrorie was then sent off shortly after half-time and Moussa Dembele scored the resulting penalty before Olivier Ntcham wrapped up the win with another spot-kick.

The Hoops boss admitted he was impressed by the "real edge and composure" shown by his team as they set up a Scottish Cup Final meeting with Motherwell on May 19.

"Motherwell are a very honest team, they work very hard, but we know that when we turn up and play, it gives us a great chance". I asked them to get into a shape and the structure was there to allow them to go and press but when it comes to the game, you have to get up closer to your opponent than we did in the first period.

"There was anger, frustration, all the sorts of emotion you would expect from a changing room that has just gone through that", he said.

Refusing to discuss his own tarnished prospects of landing the job on a permanent basis Murty parried: 'I'm not going to talk about my role.

"We were just passive".

"I wouldn't have been happy", Murty said. "But we didn't do enough for them to want to stay in the stadium today".

'There are things we can all get better at but it's too raw right now to go into it.

It hasn't been all ideal for them however, Celtic's Champions League campaign was disastrous as they recorded just one win in six games and subsequently went on to compete in the Europa League where they lost to Red Bull Leipzig.

"In the first-half, we were very dominant and in control, so I'm very pleased".

"Andy's frustrated, but I'll see him in the week and have a chat and take things from there. There are big games ahead of us and we need to make sure we get a response between now and the end of the season, if we want to finish as we should". I don't think we got close enough to them.

"What the players have done in the last couple of seasons has really inspired the supporters to believe that at times we can achieve the impossible". I've said we have to be clinical in both boxes and I don't think we managed to do that at all today.
