Reports: Ryan to Retire From Congress House speaker Paul Ryan reportedly says he won't seek re-election

While Amodei sounded perhaps the most upfront about his wishes, Rep. Tom Graves, R-Ga., suggested to Politico that having "our strongest leadership in place" would yield more success in the midterms, as energized Democrats appear to have a very realistic chance of winning roughly two dozen GOP-held House seats to retake the chamber.

The Wisconsin Republican cast the decision to end his 20-year career as a personal one, saying he did not want his children growing up with a "weekend dad". According to Gallup Poll data, President Donald Trump's approval rating was as low at 37 percent so far in 2018, proving that much of the country is unhappy with the current commander-in-chief, and subsequently, disappointed in Republicans in Congress.

Do you really want to be the next speaker of the House, Trump lightly asked Kevin McCarthy, one of his closest allies in Congress.

So you better make the most of it."He reminded reporters that he took the job "reluctantly" in 2015, when he took over from John Boehner, but Ryan also said he has no "regrets". I just think that they've overplayed their hand".

Both Democrats and moderate Republicans warned against such an outcome. "I just can't let that happen", he explained.

"Honored to have Republican Congressional Leadership join me at the @WhiteHouse this evening", Trump tweeted.

Ryan's seat is among nearly 100 more Republican-held districts that have gained new attention since Democrat Conor Lamb won a special House election in western Pennsylvania last month, in a district Trump won by nearly 20 points. Just because he'll be leaving office, Ryan said, doesn't mean he will stop working toward that goal. And Democratic Congressman Richard Neal of Springfield says he's been hearing rumors for the last month about Ryan's planned departure. Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., said an emotional Ryan "choked up a few times trying to get through" his remarks to colleagues and received three standing ovations. The most likely GOP candidate for Ryan's seat is state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, Republicans in the state said. "I understand his decision to return to Wisconsin and his family, but I will dearly miss my friend". Bernie Sanders and NARAL Pro-Choice America, faces a Democratic primary challenge from Janesville teacher Cathy Myers. He had almost $2.3 million in the bank at the end of the first quarter.

When he led the Budget Committee, Ryan proposed adding work requirements to the Medicaid program. The only declared Republicans are Paul Nehlen, who was banned from Twitter earlier this year for posts criticized as racist or anti-Semitic, and Nick Polce, an Army veteran who also co-owns a security consulting firm.
