Winning the title with five matches to go makes City the joint earliest champion in the Premier League era - matching the achievement of the 2000-01 Manchester United team.

United had to at least draw to keep the title race mathematically alive but they were stunned at Old Trafford when Jay Rodriguez headed home after the break. They lost only two matches because they were the best team.

Pep Guardiola's side have won 28 of their 33 games so far, while only losing twice and drawing three times on their way to the title.

He will be officially presented the trophy at the Etihad after what will be City's penultimate home game of the season.

As for City, it has a month to finish a season with the most points, goals and wins in a single Premier League campaign.

Since the club's takeover by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited (stake owners in City Football Group) in 2008, the player transfer industry is till date experiencing the big financial muscles of the club.

"Now we have to try [to get better]. He has done something exceptional", he told Reuters in an interview.

The only thing that seems more hard than winning the title is defending it.

"This one differs in the fact we were consistent the whole season, we played at the level we wanted to and a few times we won it before we almost threw it away. They feel more responsibility for everything and it's easier to explain how to attack and how to play out from the back", he added.

The Premier League points and goals records are also likely to be smashed but the true test of whether City deserve their status in the list of all-time greats will be what comes next.

But sealing the silverware thanks to a slip from old enemy United and its boss Jose Mourinho - a long-time rival of Guardiola - was a sweet moment, especially after it lost to its neighbor in the Manchester derby last weekend.

Wagner had a brief spell of trying the approach with Borussia Dortmund's reserve team and cut short his experiment.

Goal.com says that this current City side "have arguably played the most adventurous football with the most fluid system that the English top flight has ever seen" - but Pep's team is "not perfect". It is great to see it.

"He has done it now a second time".

Going back to the United and Arsenal rivalry from the late 90s it would be brilliant if one team could mark themselves out as actually having a chance to challenge City next term and going forward.
