The man had died on Monday in custody after his 18-year-old daughter had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, his brother Atul Singh and his aides of raping her.

A CBI official said this was because they were only following the initial FIR filed by the Uttar Pradesh police.

Sengar's lawyer said, "We support fair investigation. Our government will not compromise on this issue, no matter how influential the accused is, he will not be spared", Chief Minister Adityanath told reporters here.

The case came into the limelight after the victim tried to immolate herself on Sunday outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence, alleging police inaction against Sengar. The accused was held by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for scrutinising objective on early Friday morning. "We also thank the media for supporting out fight against the MLA and his cronies", thevictim's sister said.

What seems to have compounded trouble for the Yogi government is the fact that the Unnao rape case has come simultaneously with the horrific rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl at Kathua in Jammu.

Faced with the embarrassment of its own MLA being involved in the case, the state government had referred the matter to the Centre yesterday for CBI probe - a day before Allahabad High Court was to pronounce its order.

A special team that the government had constituted to probe the case was disbanded and the state police refused to arrest Kuldeep Singh Sengar, because the case was going to be probed by the CBI.

A CBI team also visted Unnao and quizzed several others including Unnao police and jail officials, doctors, witnesses and members of the victim's family to gather evidence before officially announcing the arrest of the lawmaker.

The teen had accused the MLA of raping her in June previous year.

The Allahabad High Court had also firmly instructed to arrest the accused MLA.

Earlier, the victim, who along with her mother and uncle, were brought here under tight security in the morning, underwent tests at the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.

"The real culprit of Unnao's victim, who was raped reportedly in June 2017, and who pleaded at the doorstep of the BJP CM even attempting self-immolation is no one but the Chief Minister and he should immediately be sacked", said Surjewala.
