Poirier and Gaethje received "Fight of the Night" honors and $50,000 apiece for their lightweight brawl on Saturday night at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. With his legs chewed up by Gaethje's most valuable weapon, Poirier began shooting for takedowns, but the ex-WSOF champ shucked off every one of his attempts, kept walking Poirier down, and momentarily rocked him with a right hand.

Dustin Poirier vowed to finesse Justin Gaethje, and finesse him he did.

The fifth-ranked lightweight, Poirier (23-5) bloodied Gathje in the first round and finished him off with a flurry early in the fourth to move a step closer to a title fight.

"I didn't get in this sport to win or lose", said Gaethje. He was forced to walk through hell in order to get there in a fight that was contested on Gaethje's terms when it comes to pace and distance.

"I'm content with what just happened, as insane and as stupid as that sounds", said Gaethje, the No. 6 lightweight. I want the biggest fights possible.

"It's the entertainment factor for me and I will be known and remembered as one of the most entertaining fighters that ever did it".

Despite still being relatively young at 29 years old, Dustin Poirier has been in the UFC for a long time - debuting in 2012, six years ago. "I was training, I knew I could be called at short notice". I go in there to entertain people This is the entertainment business.

Poirier, though, is a man whose own penchant for action could well rival anyone's and sure enough, when push came to shove, he was able to handle the heat and record a huge win for his title aspirations.

Gaethje targeted Poirier's legs with kicks from the opening bell and the strategy appeared to be paying off as it took its toll on his mobility. I felt so comfortable in there and so good, the best I've ever felt.

Poirier added: "This guy [Gaethje] would have died in here if Herb Dean hadn't stopped it". Hot prospect Israel Adesanya continued to show promise but couldn't finish his fight against Marvin Vettori. Michelle Waterson opened the main card with a split-decision victory over Cortney Casey in a technical straw weight fight.
