I learnt from Mama Winnie that politics is not for sissies.

De Lille says she doesn't see the need to explain herself to the DA saying, in her African culture, no one gets invited to a funeral, but rather it is everyone's duty to go and pay respect to the family.

Political parties regularly send invitations to the DA to attend events or rallies.

Speaking at the party's memorial ceremony held in the Free State town of Brandfort (where Madikizela was "exiled" to by the apartheid government), he criticised ANC leaders like Gwede Mantashe for focusing on the negativity, instead of mourning the leader. "But we will require from her some explanation about why she didn't tell us‚" DA chief whip, James Selfe is quoted by TimesLive.

When contacted following her address‚ De Lille declined to comment specifically on Selfe's comments.

She said she would show respect to Madikizela-Mandela because she knew her as a mother and a friend.

She is now serving as a mayor thanks to opposition parties and rebel DA councillors who defied their party's motion of no confidence in her to keep her in power.

The DA insists that it has no issue with the party's embattled Cape Town mayor, Patricia de Lille, attending a memorial for struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela hosted by rival opposition party the EFF. "Speak to her directly. But I want to assure Capetonians that I didn't take any money from the City of Cape Town", De Lille said this morning.

During her address, De Lille may have justified her appearance in Brandfort, as she quoted Madikizela-Mandela in dismissing her crossing off party lines. "Those boys don't know who they are dealing with"‚ and she laughed and laughed and laughed. "Mama Winnie spoke against the truth to power of the previous regime and she spoke truth to the power to the current regime", she said.
