One Few Over the Cuckoo's Nest starred Jack Nicholson and won five Oscars in 1976, while 1984's Amadeus won eight.

He was "a great director" with "a tremendous filmography", Wright wrote on Twitter.

Born as Jan Tomas Forman in the Czech Republic, February 18, 1932, he moved to the USA from his native country for creative pursuits.

His other significant and praiseworthy works include the rock musical titled "Hair" (1979), "Ragtime" (1981), "Valmont" (1989), "Man on the Moon" (1999) and "Goya's Ghosts" (2006) and "The People vs Larry Flint" (1996), which won him an Academy Award nomination that year.

His first feature in the U.S., 1971's Taking Off, was a critical if not commercial success.

Forman helmed the adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel "Cuckoo's Nest" and it went on to become a critically acclaimed film in 1975. The Movie earned five Oscar wins for best picture, director, actress, actor and adapted screenplay; the first five premium sweep since 1934's It Happened One Night.

Forman, the anti-authoritarian director who left his native Czechoslovakia for creative freedom in the United States, was also known for two biopics - "The People vs. Larry Flynt" (1996) and "Man on the Moon" (1999). Forman told Los Angeles Times in a 2004 interview.

When Forman was honoured with a lifetime achievement award from the Directors' Guild of America in 2012, the guild's president Taylor Hackford said he "finds the universality of the human experience in every story".

He's survived by spouse Martina, their twin sons Andrew and James, and two youngsters from a earlier marriage. Adding to the news, Martine revealed that at his end, Forman was surrounded by his whole family and close friends.
