"If Facebook is truly committed to protecting people's privacy, the company should set an example, by adhering to [the] highest data protection standards for all users". Ahead of the hearings, the company announced that not only had Cambridge Analytica improperly gathered data from up to 87 million users-rather than the previously reported 50 million-but also "malicious actors" had exploited the site's search features to collect information from "most" of its two billion users. They have long breached the trust of their users and finally with the bomb dropped - as the news about Cambridge Analytica came to light - there was no hiding for the social media giant. So we need to use that to force Facebook and other social media to take notice of this.

There, Facebook states clearly that it tracks users and non-users on every site that features a Facebook "Like" or "Share" button (including the article you're reading right now).

Zuckerberg: "There is a setting so if you don't want any data to be collected around advertising, you can turn that off and then we won't do it".

"Don't you think it's time for regulation?".

Although it's not been confirmed by Facebook, fuel has been added to the fire after a comment was made by Zuckerberg during his appearance.

After all, they could have asked some real questions.

"Diamond and Silk was deemed "unsafe". About one in three lawmakers got that response over the two days.

"Nothing is unsafe about that", Zuckerberg replied, explaining that these were mistakes. "I'm aware that there may be, but we are working with them".

On the topic of Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election, Mr Zuckerberg admitted it would be hard to completely eradicate such behaviour for "as long as Russia employs people for the activity".

Larry Buschon, a Republican from IN, brought up a concern about Facebook listening IN on people's conversations. When reached for clarification, a Facebook spokesman said Wednesday that the company's estimate already includes the possible other affected users.

In the archive is a variety of information that isn't surprising to find - when a user has logged into Facebook, their posts and messages. He also said that the firm will be increasing resources to investigate apps and take appropriate actions.

It will be weeks before Facebook responds to Congress and addresses this issue.

"We would like to thank Dr. Tayler for his service in what has been a challenging time for the company", the board of directors said. Harvesting the data and using it to target ads more effectively than its competitors can is how Facebook makes the bulk of its money.

The company has always denied these allegations.

The company does this by using different techniques integrated into pages around the web.

Senator Roger Wicker (R-Mississippi) asked Zuckerberg whether it was true that "Facebook collects call and text histories from Android phones?"

"In general we collect data on people who are not signed up for Facebook for security purposes", Zuckerberg said.
