Watkins, 24, burst onto the scene his first two years in the league with the Bills but struggled last season after he was traded to the Rams, following an injury-plagued 2016 season. That places Watkins among the highest-paid receivers in the game.

Watkins' departure - which will become official Wednesday, when free agents can sign their new agreed-upon contracts - leaves the Rams with a hole, but one that is hard to define. On the Rams, though, that tool mostly benefited the likes of Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp and Todd Gurley underneath.

Not to mention, his numbers over those two seasons: 67 receptions, 1,023 yards and 10 touchdowns. Watkins had only one 100-yard game and had only one other game in which he topped 70 yards. It said that Watkins didn't drop any passes on 39 catchable targets during the regular season in 2017. In the Rams' playoff loss to Atlanta, Watkins had one catch for 23 yards.

Now, Watkins joins an offense that already has plenty of big-play potential. Still, he was quite productive over his first two years in the league with almost 1,000 yards in his rookie year and 1,047 yards in just 13 games in his sophomore campaign. He was going to get paid in free agency and it was also possible he would take a shorter deal with a young quarterback in order to set himself up for free agency again at the age of 27.

The Chiefs are making their first free agent splash. Kansas City agreed to trade Alex Smith to the Redskins this offseason, opening up the starting quarterback spot for Patrick Mahomes.
