Fiorentina paid an emotional tribute to former captain Davide Astori as the Italian club played their first game since the sudden death of the 31-year-old last Sunday.

Before the match at the Artemio Franchi stadium, the two teams and fans observed a minute of silence in tribute to the Italy defender, age 31, who died on March 4 in his sleep from an apparent heart attack, reports Efe.

Players lined up with "Ciao Davide" slogans on their shirts before displaying a banner across the centre circle, which read: 'Captain forever'.

Play was then halted in the 13th minute - Astori's jersey number - with players giving him an ovation that lasted an entire minute.

The game was paused in the 13th minute as the club's fans commemorated the Italy worldwide with a stunning display.

The win moves Fiorentina up into ninth on 38 points ahead of the rest of Sunday's games, which includes the clash between leaders Napoli and fourth-placed Inter Milan at the San Siro in the late kickoff.

Fiorentina midfielder Marco Benassi is sure "Davide Astori was on the field with us today and I like to think he helped Vitor Hugo's leap".
