Since the 1997 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs' place close to, or at the top of the league, was an annual constant.

San Antonio Spurs superstar Kawhi Leonard is expected to return to action during the team's game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday (Friday AEDT), per reports.

The 26-year-old missed the first 27 games of the season due to his ailing quad, and after returning to the lineup for nine contests, he landed back on the shelf, having last played on January 13.

Leonard, 26, has not played since January 13 as he's dealt with a quad injury that's persisted all season. In the aftermath of the All-Star break, there was legitimate fears that Leonard, the 2014 NBA Finals MVP, would miss the remainder of the season.

If Leonard were able to return during the week, that would give him a month to readjust to the Spurs before the playoffs. "I don't have a set date right now (for my comeback)". Playoffs and the Spurs seem intertwined and an assumed part of every season, especially with Gregg Popovich as the head coach.

To say that Kawhi Leonard's season has not gone according to plan is definitely an understatement. "The guys have been doing it all season".

But it's not just the injuries themselves that have been weird, but rather all the speculation and changing statuses that have come with them. I'm thankful for them, for the teammates that I have. Although San Antonio has been pretty very bad of late, they'll certainly be a team to keep a close eye on now with Kawhi Leonard likely set to return on Thursday.
