The current motive behind the attack is unknown but security is said to have been increased at all embassies across the capital city.

Police spokesman Harald Soeros told AFP early on March 12 that the 26-year-old assailant "died on the spot" after being shot by the guard, who was in a sentry box outside the building.

An Austrian soldier shot a man attacking him in front of the residence of the Iranian ambassador in Vienna.

"The attacker stabbed the soldier repeatedly". A soldier suffered injuries in the attack.

He further pointed to his communication with the Iranian ambassador to Austria, noting that no damage has been inflicted on the residence of the envoy as the result of the attack.

"He initially used pepper spray" against the assailant, Soeros said, before opening fire.

"We have asked the Austrian government to look into the issue as soon as possible, and pay more attention to the protection of Iranian diplomatic locations in that country".

Police have ordered reinforcements around all diplomatic missions in Vienna, which is also home to many global organizations.
