Until recently, device makers big and small had to use the same Google Assistant regardless of whether they were making the Assistant work with phones, fridges or lights.

These zany abilities aside, Assistant now supports better media playback integration, extending its functions beyond just podcasts to TV shows, interviews and interactive stories, along with support for a better carousel inside the Assistant window for more convenient interaction with visual content.

Meanwhile, expanded notification features for Assistant Actions are now out of beta.

Actions that are connected to Android apps also have new Assistant features en route.

Google Assistant Interactions

Google has opened up a "Fun House" in Austin, Texas for South by Southwest where they're presumably showing off all these cool new features, so if you're in the area head over and check them out.

Assistant Actions now support something Google is calling "Custom Device Actions". Google will allow developers of Actions to plug into digital purchases including paid app purchases, in-app purchases, in-app subscriptions and the likes. Google is set to make its voice-enabled assistant more flexible as it is letting developers build device-specific commands for it.

An abundance of user actions can be found in Google's latest updates to "What it can do". This allows for more audio experiences like "longer meditation sessions, relaxing sounds, clips from your favorite TV shows and news briefings". For example, if a washer has a specific color cycle, you could activate that cycle simply by asking the Google Assistant. Voice commands can be used to pause or replay media, and a media player will appear on your phone. The new support allows Actions to send alerts like "newly added workout, a change in a stock price, or a news alert, right when it happens". They will be able to turn off the display and still continue listening to the audio. The subscriptions were one of the original features of Google Assistant when it was launched, however, the update brings more new things in this feature such as daily updates and push notifications.
