"In an anti-GOP year-which this is shaping up to be-the Republican candidates will need to run much stronger campaigns or be prepared for the national party to cut them loose", Spain said.

"I've already said on the front page of the newspaper that I don't support Nancy Pelosi", Lamb says in the ad. In interviews with almost two dozen administration officials, senior House Republicans and top party strategists, Saccone was almost universally panned as a deeply underwhelming candidate who leaned excessively on the national party to execute a massive, multimillion-dollar rescue effort.

Both 18th District candidates expressed some support for the tariffs in a recent debate. "The real issues are the ones that affect your lives". There are over 80,000 union members in the district, according to the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO. Murphy had been strongly against abortion during his time in Congress. In the last election, the local AFL-CIO endorsed him for re-election.

The stakes are high in the March 13 special election.

Biden also said, "Some people in my party don't even get it anymore".

In doing so Tuesday, the former Vice President offered a glimpse of how he'd approach 2020 if he runs for president again: by working to rebuild a Democratic coalition that includes white, rural, blue-collar voters.

This time around, the organization is supporting Lamb, and not just because it sees him as a union supporter, but because Saccone is seen as an anti-union politician. And the Republican National Committee has spent more than $1 million on its own operation that was expected to reach 250,000 targeted voters - either by phone or in person - by election day, said RNC spokesman Rick Gorka.

The Lamb-Saccone race is considered close - "nip and tuck", said political analyst Terry Madonna, a professor of public affairs at Franklin & Marshall College.

No matter who wins on Tuesday - and what it could predict for the 2018 midterms - the victor in this Pennsylvania seat will face a different challenge in November: a new congressional map. "He reminds me of my son Beau", the former DE attorney general and rising Democratic star who died of brain cancer in 2015, Biden said.

"He believes in hard work, he believes in labor", Biden said, referring to Lamb's working-class credentials. Those positions have likely benefitted Lamb in what has been a recently reliable district for Republicans, according to Madonna.

He signed orders Thursday imposing tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum imports from most countries, a move he said would help regrow those industries in the United States.

"I'd like to meet him", Debich says.

Over at Republican headquarters in Green Tree, state Rep. Saccone said he sensed a growing shift in the momentum despite recent polls.

"The president and his policies are popular in PA-18", said Alexander.

While the seat is safely Democratic - the only Republican challenger is a wackadoodle bent on gaining attention rather than votes - a Newman win would kick out one more moderate and make the Democrat House more progressive.
