As Jhujhunu has led from the front in converting BBBP campaign into a revolution, the scheme is being expanded, from this small town which has scripted a success story to nationwide, said Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje on Wednesday.

Taking part in the discussion External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj spoke about the women that have broken stereotypes and have triumphed in the areas that were considered to be the monopolised only by men.

On the occasion of International Women's Day today, the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, launched the National Nutrition Mission, and expansion of the coverage of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme, at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan.

He also launched the National Nutrition Mission, aimed at improving nutrition levels of women and children and reducing low birth weight by 2% each year. "It is unfortunate that we have to plead people to save girl child, and use funds from budget separately for creating awareness".

Modi lamented how preference for male children had made 21st century India worse than what it was in the 18th century when a girl child was at least allowed to take birth before being drowned in a milk tub.

She said from the number of 800 girls on every 1000 boys, the number has now risen to 900 girls on every 1000 boys.

Modi will expand BBBP programme from the existing 161 to 640 districts across the country.

"The steady efforts started bringing results and we see India transforming". He said there is no question of discrimination based on gender.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi said the Centre had taken several initiatives for the welfare of women.

Across the country, a host of events were held, new programmes launched and women achievers awarded to recall the nation's commitment towards women's empowerment and ending gender disparity. He praised the Jhunjhunu district for registering a significant improvement in child sex ratio.

More than 10 crore people are expected to benefit from the programme.
