1 dead, 2 more injured in 'accidental' high school shooting in Alabama

The shooting happened during dismissal time at Huffman High School, Birmingham City Schools said in a statement. The other student is in critical but stable condition, according to the site. An adult victim was treated and released at the scene. "The school was placed on brief lockdown and police were called". Birmingham police say the gun believed to have been used in the shooting has been recovered.

Birmingham Police Chief Orlando Wilson said a 17-year-old female student was killed and a 17-year-old male student was injured in the shooting between 3 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

"We lost a person, not just a person, but a student".

Herring said Huffman High School will be open tomorrow, and counselors and police will be on campus.

The incident ocurred at Birmingham's Huffman High School, the largest of seven high schools in the Birmingham City School System. "Someone's daughter, someone's best friend", said Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin during a press conference.

Officials confirm to WIAT one student has died from their injuries.
