Karnataka lokayukta P Vishwanatha Shetty was stabbed in his office in Bengaluru.
During the questioning he told the police that he had filed three complaints with the Lokayukta against several government officials.
The commissioner added that a metal detector in the lobby of the building was not functioning and the gunman provided to the lokayukta was waiting outside the cabin. But no one seems to have even thought of that.
"It is deeply shocking that even Karnataka Lokayukta is not safe in Bengaluru". The initial indications were that Tej Raj Sharma was mentally disturbed.
According to an NDTV report, leader of Karnataka's ruling Congress said the Lokayukta prefers to be accessible to the people and there is hardly any security at his office. Justice Shetty was admitted to the hospital in serious condition.
The staff barged into the chamber when they heard a scream from inside and managed to apprehended the attacker and hand him over to the police.
Shetty, a former high court judge, took over as the Karnataka Lokayukta in January 2017, according to an India Today report. Apparently, he was allowed in the premises without a proper check.
The perpetrator was a man named Tejas Sharma, who went to his office with a complaint only to be told that the case was shut, officials said. State Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy confirmed the incident and said that the Lokayukta is out of danger. As the actor Kamal Haasan noted, even the iconic and iconoclast Periyar (whose statue was targeted in Tamil Nadu) was against any form of worship, including the putting up of statues.
The doctors also confirmed the newspaper about his health and said he is stable.
